Reading: Psalm 51 & Matthew 9:9-13
God is merciful. Mercy is not getting (the bad) what we deserve. God’s mercy is His “active compassion to His creation.” God grants us life (days, months, years) when we are deserving of death right now. He exercises his mercy as he chooses, according to his sovereign will – he is obligated to give mercy to none YET he gives it to saint and sinner alike. God does not take his seat on justice, he takes his seat on mercy (Exodus 25:10-22) – where the law condemns, mercy triumphs (James 2:13).
Reflection Questions
- Do you believe this to be true?
- When have you been awed by receiving mercy? How can you use this experience to increase your awe of God?
- How have you seen God’s mercy in your life?
