Scents of Fall

“At no other time (than autumn) does the earth let itself be inhaled in one smell, the ripe earth; in a smell that is in no way inferior to the smell of the sea, bitter where it borders on taste, and more honeysweet where you feel it touching the first sounds. Containing depth within itself, darkness, something of the grave almost.”
Rainer Maria Rilke, Letters on Cézanne

Fall Fun: Dim the lights and light some fall scented candles. I’m sitting on my porch; enjoying the crispness of fall and the fact that it’s actually cool enough to light candles!

What’s your favorite fall scent?

Psalm 9:

Each day I’m providing some questions to think through and pray and meditate on about the verse. My hope is for you to think deeply about these questions. They’re pretty basic questions and can easily be washed over with the Sunday School answers, but I challenge and encourage you to ask and answer them honestly and dialogue with God about the implications of your honest answers. If any of them bring about shame or a sense that you need to “do something” to fix yourself, this is not from God. Seek God’s grace and conviction in these verses, and remember that only relationship with him through the Holy Spirit brings about change and freedom. If you want to open the dialogue up to more people, feel free to write your thoughts or questions in the comments.

  • Read all of chapter 9.
  • What stood out to you?
  • Psalm 9 is a psalm of praise for God’s protection and deliverance from hostile nations. What has God delivered you from in your life? What has God protected you from in your life that you might not even realize? (A much more convicting question for me!)
  • The TNIV Bible commentary states that in this psalm, God’s destruction of the hostile nations came from means other than the Israelite’s victory over them. In what ways in your life has God had victory in your life without you doing anything? Has there ever been a situation where you felt like a failure, but later you were able to see God do great things through or in spite of it?
